CalGas for Maritime
According to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and Regulation XI-17 it requires all Safety Of Life At Sea applicable (SOLAS) vessels to carry portable gas detection units (GDU) for monitoring Oxygen deficiency or the presence of harmful gases, commonly, Carbon Monoxide and Hydrogen Sulfide.
“Every ship to which chapter 1 applies shall carry an appropriate portable atmosphere testing instrument(s).
As a minimum, these shall be capable to measure concentrations of Oxygen, flammable gases or vapors, Hydrogen Sulfide and Carbon Monoxide. Instruments carried under other requirements may satisfy this regulation. Suitable means shall be provided for the calibration of all such instruments”
Dangerous areas include but are not limited to the following;
Engine Area / Boiler Area / Fuel and Ballast Tanks / Cargo Pump Rooms / Compressor Rooms / Double Bottoms / Chain Lockers / Cargo Area
There are still way too many deaths every year in maritime that are preventable. Today’s ships are being built bigger and carrying the same number of crew and that combination make more areas of confined space and the potential for deadly gases to be present in those areas.
