CalGas for Oil and Gas / Refineries
Those that work in this industry know perils they face each day and while we have come a long way in PPE, Gas Detection Units (GDU) and engineering, we still have way too many preventable injuries and deaths.
There are 3 common gases that are most prevalent in this industry, Carbon Monoxide, Hydrogen Sulfide and Petroleum Gases. While there are obviously more than 3, we are going to deal with the these because of their prevalence.
Carbon Monoxide – CO
Although todays engines are burning much cleaner, there are still many areas in this industry where Carbon Monoxide can cause harm. Please be mindful of thick black smoke that collects in cramped or confined areas.
Hydrogen Sulfide – H2S
This gas is usually present during the decaying of organic material. It is commonly found in formations that are being drilled. It is known for its rotten egg odor but it is also deadly. The smell wears off and you become desensitized to it and that is when you can find yourself in huge trouble.
Petroleum Gases- CH4, C6H6, C4H10
These include Methane, Benzene and Butane and are all a hydrocarbon gas. These are commonly found in storage tanks during thieving and gauging.
There are so many potential deadly or explosive gases around this industry. Proper fitting PPE and fixed or portable GDU’s will go a long way in keeping employees safe. We believe you should calibrate every 30 days in this industry and Bump Test just prior to each use. As frequently as the monitors are used in this industry, we feel this mitigates further risk and takes that extra step.
